Selection of the Best Campgrounds is based on a combination of campground facilities, campground ambiance, and the proximity of outstanding recreational opportunities. The ratings are intended to serve as a general guide and may not always concur with the interests and experiences of others.

Head on North to the Redwood Empire

Only 45 miles north of Fort Bragg on Highway 1 begins the magnificent Redwood Empire. Visitors first arrive at Standish-Hickey State Recreation Area with a number of enjoyable campgrounds. Not far beyond, continuing your journey on Highway 101, reach Richardson Grove State Park and then Humboldt Redwoods State Park with its popular Avenue of the Giants. Campgrounds aboud all along the route.

Mendocino County Campgrounds

Campgrounds along the rugged Mendocino coast are limited, but the area is so beautiful that it is well worth the drive. For the best facilities along with a choice of sandy beaches, MacKerricher State Park is favored by many. The park's Laguna Point has observation decks to watch the seals and tide pools for explorations. Nearby Glass Beach and Pudding Creek Beach make great outings.

For divers and kayakers, Van Damme State Park is a favorite base. Access to the ocean is usually quite easy from the park's sheltered beach. In the summer guided kayak tours are available. Hot showers in the campgrounds are an added plus.

Hendy Woods State Park is a beautiful camping destination with groves of towering redwoods, meandering trails, and babbling creeks. Off the beaten track, it makes a restful and revitalizing weekend retreat.

Group Campsites can be found at MacKerricher, Russian Gulch, and Van Damme state parks.
