Gurnsey Creek Campground

Gurnsey Creek Campground is in the Lassen National Forest along its namesake creek. The campground is off Highway 36, about 14 miles west of Chester and Lake Almanor. The southern entrance to Lassen Volcanic National Park is 14 miles to the north. Visitors to the campground enjoy hiking, picnicking, and fishing.

Gurnsey Creek Campground offers 30 standard campsites that can accommodate RVs, trailers, and tents. The sites are spread through a mixed conifer forest. All of the 30 sites are first-come, first-served. There are also 2 Group Campsites which must be reserved prior to arrival.

Gurnsey Creek Campground Group Campsites

Gurnsey Creek Campground has 2 group sites. Site 1 consists of 7 campsites (#31 - 37) and can accommodate up to 56 people and 7 vehicles. Group Site 2 consists of 14 campsites (#38 - 51) and can accommodate up to 112 people and 14 vehicles. Both sites can be reserved together for groups as large as 168 people. The campsites within the group area cannot be reserved individually. Check-in and check-out time is noon. Campsites may be reserved up a year prior to arrival date.


General Camping Information

Opening and closing dates of campgrounds are only estimates, usually dependent on weather conditions. Not all campsites can accommodate trailers or RVs of all lengths.

In order to prevent the spread of invasive insects, obtain firewood locally.

Accessible Sites

Designated Accessible sites are usually reserved for people with disabilities who have a vehicle displaying an accessible parking placard or license plate.

Attractions and Activities

Campers at Gurnsey Creek Campground enjoy good fishing locally along Gurnsey Creek and many wonderful adventures to the north in nearby Lassen Volcanic National Park.

  • Fish along Battle Creek.
  • Drive north and make an Auto Tour of nearby Lassen Volcanic National Park, stopping at sites such as Sulfur Works, Bumpass Hell Overlook, Devastated Area, and Chaos Crags.
  • Hike 5 miles up to the summit of Lassen Peak.
  • Participate in Ranger-led Programs at the park, including nature walks, campfire programs, Starry Night ranger-led programs, astronomy programs, and snowshoe hikes.
  • Tour Loomis Museum, which features historic photos of Lassen's last eruption.
  • Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center has wonderful exhibits about the park's volcanic activity. The Center includes both a cafe and a gift shop.
  • Venture into Subway Cave, located just north of the park. The cave is less than a half-mile long and reveals the underground world of a lava tube. Don't forget your flashlight.

Key Gurnsey Creek Campground Regulations

  1. Dogs must be kept on leash and attended at all times.
  2. Fires are only permitted in the provided fire rings. Fires must be totally extinguished before retiring for the night.
  3. Avoid spreading pests by purchasing firewood locally.
  4. Off-road vehicle use is prohibited within the campground.
