Hirz Bay Group Campgrounds

Hirz Bay Group Campgrounds are located in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest on the McCloud Arm of Shasta Lake. The campgrounds are near the main Hirz Bay Campground. Campers at the group campsites find good fishing along the shore near the campgrounds. Boaters can launch their vessels at nearby Hirz Bay launch ramp.

Hirz Bay has 2 group campgrounds: Hirz Bay 1 and Hirz Bay 2. Both camps are in a forest of oak and manzanita. Both campsites require a short walk from the parking areas to the campsites. Read the note below about the Locked Entry Gates.

Hirz Bay 1 Group Campground can accommodate up to 120 people and 21 vehicles. It is located a little more inland that Hirz Bay 2. Facilities include a large fire ring, 2 large sinks with faucets, a large group BBQ along with several samller cook grills, and 8 picnic tables.

Hirz Bay 2 Group Campground can accommodate up to 80 people and 23 vehicles. Among the facilities at the camp are 10 picnic tables, 1 large fire ring, 1 large group BBQ, 2 grate fireplaces, and 2 water faucets.

The reservations website cautions: "Reservation holders must contact Shasta Recreation Office at least 1 week prior to arrival for a combination code to access campground; failure to do so could lead to a locked facility without access for a night or longer and no refund."

Attractions and Activities

Shasta Lake is one of the most popular recreation lakes in the state. Groups who camop at Hirz Bay Group Campgrounds are near boat launch ramps and good opportunities for shore fishing. Other attractions are not far.

  • At full capacity Shasta Lake has 30,000 surface acres and 365 miles of shoreline.

  • Shasta Caverns has guided tours of the caves and dinner cruises on Shasta.
  • Summer interpretive programs on weekends at many campgrounds
  • Take a free, 1-hour Shasta Dam Tour. A great choice on a hot day.
  • Stop in at the Shasta Lake Visitor Center along Interstate 5 north of Redding for information about the local area.

Key Hirz Bay Group Campgrounds Regulations

  1. Bears: Store all food and similar items in bear-proof lockers, not in vehicles.
  2. Dogs must be kept on leash and attended at all times. At night they must be kept in a vehicle or tent.
  3. Fires may only be lit in provided fire rings or cooking pedestals.

General Camping Information

Opening and closing dates of campgrounds are only estimates, usually dependent on weather conditions. Not all campsites can accommodate trailers or RVs of all lengths. If using a reservation website, check to be sure your vehicles will fit in the parking space for your campsite.
